HAVE YOU BEEN ARRESTED? What To Know Before You Follow The Officer To The Station.

Getting arrested for the first time can be very confusing and intimidating. You’re dealing with Police detectives, lawyers, judges, and maybe even cellmates. You may not understand what’s happening, or why you’re going to certain places. This is what you should understand when you are in this situation.

1. To reduce risk to yourself, Do not resist arrest even if you believe the arrest is unfair. Follow the Officer’s command.

2. Say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don’t answer any questions or give any explanations or excuses.

3. You have the right to make a phone call and the police cannot listen if you call a lawyer. But remember they can and often will listen to a call made to anyone else.

4. Make emergency plans if you have children or have any chronic illness which requires medication.

5. Don’t say anything, sign any document or make any decisions without a lawyer. Remember, being arrested doesn’t make you guilty.
