In life, you need many more things besides talent. Things like good advice and common sense (Hack Wilson).
Common sense is also known as good sense, mother wit(inborn intelligence), or native wit, is ordinary sensible understanding; one’s basic intelligence which allows for plain understanding and without which good decisions or judgements cannot be made.
Common sense can be understood from two perspectives;
“the knack” for seeing things as they are, and doing things as they ought to be done. The second is “folk wisdom” signifying unreflective knowledge not reliant on specialized training.
Common sense is a requirement. Even the most educated people need common sense. Common sense will let you do things as they ought to be done.
Education without common sense is meaningless. Your attitude and personality can fail and you are likely to get stuck in the middle of success without common sense. Proverbs 17:16 says it does a fool no good to spend money on education because he has no common sense. Without common sense, you cannot figure out how to do all the essential acts of living. For example, you don’t need a degree certificate to know that when you are hungry you have to eat and when you are thirsty drink water.
Without common sense, the obvious simplicity becomes complicated. Countless people died because they failed to recognize the value of common sense.
In my quest to know what is going on in the world, one SHS student discloses to me that, they have been entering the bush to Pray from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am. So I hilariously asked her these questions: Is God living in the bush? Are the teachers aware of where you go to pray? Should anything happen to you who is to blame? Her answers to the above questions were negative. To her, she is always afraid but follows them because she didn’t want them to say she is possessed. Most people are spending money on education not knowing is not the education they need but common sense.
Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes (Oscar Wilde).
Common sense should tell you that no matter the magnitude of your faith, you must do things at the right time.
Truth, wisdom, learning, and good sense——these are worth paying for but too valuable to sell (Proverbs 23:23).
Through education, you would come to know that, on the streets, red means stop, yellow means prepare to take off and green means go. Education will also show you the right lane to take but common sense will tell you that even though you are on the right lane, there is a brake failure of a vehicle coming in your direction, so pop up on the other side.
Sometimes unintelligent people with common sense are more valued than those who think are smart but lack common sense. A great person comes with knowledge and common sense.
Success is not a matter of mastering subtle, sophisticated theory but rather of embracing common sense with uncommon levels of discipline and persistence (Patrick Lencioni).
Common sense is an approach to knowledge and in everyday life, people generate and utilize common sense for various pragmatic purposes. It is a type of basic awareness and the ability to judge that most people are expected to share naturally, even if they cannot explain. Education will let u explain why when you touch fire you feel the pain and get burnt, but common sense will tell you that when you get in touch with fire you will get burnt even though you cannot explain why. Common sense will keep you safe.
The abundance of common sense is wisdom.
Lately, common sense seems to be running on low these days and age. For example, when you see a dustbin, the first thing that comes to mind is, is a store of waste, yet people drink water and put the sachets rubber on the streets even if there is an empty bin right beside them. What is the sense in walking whilst whatsapping and sending text messages on a busy street? Many are those who have been cheated because they lacked common sense. Lack of common sense makes people make stupid decisions and always get themselves locked in the philosophy of the fools——“Had I Known”.
We do not make pragmatic decisions and depend solely on theories.
In the olden days, our forefathers without education were able to take pragmatic steps to problem-solving.
If people use common sense and their guiding moral compass, I think they’ll generally stay out of trouble (Steve Chabot).
Education plus character and common sense is the best form of education.
