STRINGENT APPROACHES TO FIGHTING ILLEGAL MINING: MINERALS AND FORESTRY COMMISSIONS TASKED

The Hon. Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Samuel A. Jinapor, has tasked the Minerals and Forestry Commissions to on Friday, 7th May,2021, publish the list of all companies holding prospecting and reconnaissance licenses in forest reserves.
Hon. Jinapor stated this at the Minister’s Press briefing held today, April 30, 2021 at the Ministry of Information in Accra.
The move, the Hon.Minister said will ensure “the highest standard of transparency.”

He also indicated that H.E the President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has designated forest reserves and water bodies as “RED Zones ” and has directed strict enforcement.
The Minister further disclosed that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) has constituted a monitoring and evaluation team to ensure the enforcement of these measures.
He said ” People could report persons involved in illegal mining to the Desk at the Ministry for Prompt Action”.
On his part, the Minister for Defence, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul warned anyone who will go back to mine on the water bodies after the current surgical operation will have himself or a herself to blame.
Issued by Public Relations Unit, MLNR.

The Ministry came to a conclusion that high priorities measures were put in place. The first measure taken by the Ministry was to direct the Forestry Commission to see the issuance of forest and entry permit for purposes of mining for those who are familiar with the processes, having secured all your payments from the Minerals commission, the EPA and so on and so forth .

For companies who have already acquired mining licences and or mining leases and gotten forest and entry permit and mining and following the environmental protocols, they have what they call accrued rights, so it will not affect them and there are a good number of responsible large-scale and small-scale mining going on in Forest reserve, but in the future no more forest and entry permit. And those who apply for prospecting and reconnaisance and or exploration licences and again those who are familiar with the mining industry , those kinds of licences are for you to go and check whether or not the concession is mineralized or you can find minerals in the concession. If you find, you never come back to the mineral station to go through the process which is all the way to get a mineral operating permit and a forest and entry permit before you can mine.
