The Abel Mengistab Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Abel Mengistab, the 16-year-old son of Ethiopian immigrants who was shot and killed on December 6, 2008 while waiting at a bus stop after Christmas shopping with his family in Northfield, Minnesota. He was valedictorian of his high school and planned to attend college at the University of Minnesota Duluth that fall to study architecture and engineering. The scholarship was established by the Mengistab Family Foundation to honor his legacy and support students who embody Abel’s passion for learning, community involvement, entrepreneurship, and humanitarian work.

The Abel Mengistab Memorial Scholarship offers a variety of benefits to deserving students. What Are the Eligibility Requirements for the Abel Mengistab Memorial Scholarship?

The Abel Mengistab Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of the late Abel Mengistab and to provide financial assistance for students who demonstrate a commitment to community service and leadership.   1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  2. Be enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university located in the Canada
